Who this page is for
This page is for people who want more control over a chat assistant, its models, or the documents it can access. Separate the interface from the model behind it: a self-hosted chat application may connect to local models, hosted APIs, or both. Compare the complete deployment, including setup effort, account controls, file handling, tools, updates, and the quality of the selected model.
Selection criteria
- Source availability and deployment terms that match the level of control you need.
- Support for local, self-hosted, or chosen hosted model providers without obscuring the data path.
- Conversation, file, retrieval, multimodal, and tool features relevant to the intended workflow.
- Authentication, user separation, storage, export, deletion, and administrator controls for shared use.
- Maintenance effort and model quality evaluated as separate parts of the overall experience.

How to choose
Open alternatives can be excellent, but verify licenses as well as source access. Current Open WebUI releases are source-available under the Open WebUI License, whose branding restriction is not OSI-approved, so they are excluded from this open-source shortlist. Hosted assistants may still win on convenience and frontier multimodal quality.

FAQ
Can an open-source chat app fully replace ChatGPT?
It can replace many chat, document, and local-model workflows, but feature and model quality are separate. Hosted assistants may offer integrated multimodal tools or frontier models that a self-hosted deployment does not reproduce. Compare the tasks you rely on rather than the chat layout alone.
Can I keep prompts and documents on my own machine?
Yes, with a fully local model and correctly configured local interface, but verify every provider, plugin, web-search feature, embedding service, and update setting. A self-hosted interface can still transmit data when it is connected to an external service.
What is the difference between open-source software and an open-weight model?
The chat application and the model are different artifacts with different licenses. Open-source software covers the application code; open-weight describes access to model parameters and does not by itself establish an open-source license or unrestricted use.
